Brookside Families, we have made some plans for returning completed student work to you, picking up new student work, and getting your child’s belongings from the classroom. Additionally, we are all concerned about having closure for the school year for our students, staff and family members. We are beginning to develop a plan for a ‘Reunion Picnic!’ Returning students’ property, and collecting packets: Packet Day is April 14th 8:30-10:30, 10:30-12:30 or 4:30-6:30 Families, please come and pick-up your child’s items and drop off the completed packets! Just pull up in front of the school (like last time). Our staff will be handing out bags as you drive by, and will be collecting the completed packets. Staff will be in masks and gloves. This plan replaces the plan to mail packets. The following Packet Day will be May 4th. Closure for students, families, and staff: We are planning to host a Reunion Picnic on the Playground for our CURRENT TK-Grade 2 students on Friday, August 21, from 11:00-1:00, pending the all-clear from COVID 19. Afterward, Second Grade students will have the opportunity to tour Blosser Lane Elementary! Save the Date! More information to come. We miss our students and families very much, and hope you are all staying safe.

WUSD Update: It seems likely that we will be in our modified school mode for the remainder of the school year. I am very pleased and proud of the work being done by our teachers, for many their technology skills are getting much stronger. I am also proud of our students and parents for working so cooperatively with the schools during this time. There is no question, this is not the ideal way for education to be done, but it is critical to stop the spread of the virus. If the situation changes and the shelter in place is lifted it is fair to say that we all would gladly resume normal operations. Each school site has modified their program based on the age level of the students and available technology. It is very important to stay in touch with your student’s school for dates, times, expectations and directions. Willits High School and Sanhedrin will have a graduation this year, even if it is the first event of Frontier Days or later. These two buildings will be using an A, B, and Credit/No Credit grading system for the students. It is vital to remember in grades 9-12 credits are required to graduate. Students who are unsuccessful in their classes this third trimester will have an opportunity to attend summer school or retake the class(es) next school year. We are asking seniors to focus on core classes, which for most those students it’s English and Economics. Spring break is next week and we hope students will use this time to will be a catch, no new assignments will be issued. Our teachers will also use this break to try and connect with those students who are struggling or not being productive. Baechtel Grove students are doing most of their modified school using technology and will be issued grades similar to the high school- with the exception of elective classes only being graded as credit/no credit. Some students are doing packets and need to stay in touch with the school for pick and drop off instructions. Students will be evaluated at BGMS for promotion to the next grade level using current policies in place. We are expecting a larger number of students requiring summer school. However, for the vast majority of students, this will not interfere with them being promoted to the next grade level. Blosser Lane students are working both online and in packets. If you have Internet access at home but no computer, contact your classroom teacher to inquire about borrowing a school Chromebook for the rest of the year. All students should be using IXL (this program works well even on a Smartphone). Teachers will document students turned in schoolwork on a credit/no credit basis. This time of modified school will not interfere with them moving to the next grade level. Please stay in contact with the school for pick up and drop off times for packets. I will also be asking the teachers to pack up each student’s personal belongings and get them back to you during the next pick up and drop of session of schoolwork. At Brookside, students are working with packets. All students should also be using IXL (works well even on a Smartphone). If you have trouble getting into IXL please contact your school for help. Teachers will be documenting schoolwork turned in by students on a credit/no credit basis, this modified study will not interfere with students moving to the next grade level. Please stay in contact with the school for packet pick up and drop off times. I am also asking teachers to pack up each student’s personal belongings and get them back to the students during the next pick up/drop of session of schoolwork. At this age level, reading with them and by them is huge. At Sherwood, in grades K-5 students are using packets for their work and I also highly recommend IXL online. If you need help please contact Mark Westerburg. Teachers will document students turned in schoolwork on a credit/no credit basis. This time of modified school will not interfere with them moving to the next grade level. Please stay in contact with the school for packet pick up and drop off times. I am also asking teachers to pack up each student’s personal belongings and get them back to the students during the next pick up/drop of session of schoolwork. In grades K-2 grades, reading with them and by them is huge. This is a very unique and difficult time, but please know, here at Willits Unified we truly miss our students and greatly appreciate the role our parents have taken on. We will continue to provide breakfast and lunch during Spring Break. If you are having trouble accessing food service please call and leave a message at 707-459-5314. Stay safe and practice social distancing guidelines.

We have been using this program at grades 3-5 for the past two years. Based on the situation we are in, I have expanded the use of it and added Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. If you have a student in grades 3-5 they know all about it.  IXL has grade Level Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. (Science and Social Studies start at 2nd grade). The program is linked to California State Standards for all areas and is set to work in conjunction with the Math book series we use in grades K-5. This is new to the K-2 teachers, they will be able to see your child's progress and what the struggle with. The 3-5 Grade teachers already know who to use it and will now be able to use it for Language Arts as well. If you go to the district website and click on the Modified School Information Button you will see a video named IXL to watch. DOWNLOAD the App for tablets, Ipads, Iphone and smartphones  https://www.ixl.com/apps   Login Websitie  https://www.ixl.com/signin/willits   Username  Firstname lastname @Willits   (Example:  johnsmith@willitsPassword   abcd1234     ( you can change it if you wish once your are up and running. ) Thank you for all your efforts at home.

Hi Brookside Families, In addition to the option of picking up independent study packets at school tomorrow, you can also download and print packets at home. Here is how... 1. Get the Willits USD app (it’s green with a redwood tree) 2. In the app on the left side, is a list of options. Click on the bottom option, ‘Modified School Instruction.’ 3. You will see the 8 weeks of modified assignments our school has available. Week 4 is the assignment we used for Week 1 independent study (sent home last Day of school). Weeks 5 and 6 are the next two weeks of packets we are handing out tomorrow. Download and print Weeks 5 and 6 if you wish, or you can pick them up at school tomorrow. You can always save the completed packet 1 and turn it in with packets 2 and 3 when we return to school.

WUSD was informed this afternoon by the state that the bus drivers (all but 2) First Aid endorsement was given by a provider not recognized by the Red Cross. Although the training is virtually identical and has been approved in the past our drivers have been grounded until that is fixed. We are working on re-certification tomorrow morning. However, based on this information the buses will not be running tomorrow, with the exception of bus # which transports special needs students. School will be held at normal times and morning tardiness will be given a half hour grace period. I am very sorry about the inconvenience but CHP would not give any grace period to get the alternative certification. We will be posting tomorrow afternoon the status of buses for Friday. The drivers and I are working hard to resolve this issue ASAP.

If you are going to volunteer with WUSD this year you need to have your fingerprints done. The company Print Your Mitts, will be at Brookside Elementary Open House on Thursday at 6 PM until 8. WUSD has a form that the DOJ charges us $32 for us to have processed and Mitt Your Mitts will charge you $30 for their service. If your interested please have 2 checks available to use. We greatly appreciate our volunteers. We don't have any choice on the rules or cost. I would get there early, last year there was a line.

Hello BGMS Parents, This is Ms. Munguia, the Principal with your weekly announcements. All of our teachers are ready to welcome all of our students into classes tomorrow, Monday, August 19th. We will be giving out class schedules to all students tomorrow starting at 7:30 am. The WEB Leaders will be ready to show any new students, including our sixth graders how to get around campus, and to their classrooms. I am reminding you that this week, Tuesday is not a minimum day, and to go on line to our new website to view the district calendar for minimum days at www.willitsunified.com. We are starting our sports program with Volleyball sign ups this week. If any student is interested in playing volleyball on the BGMS team, they can sign up in the front office this week. Please refer to your handbook for sports eligibility. Something to look for this week is the technology use agreements that will be brought home by students. We will also have them posted on our website. If there are any concerns about student class schedules, ask Pam, in the front office, to put in your concern to Ms. Bravo, our counselor. I also want to make you aware that the Back to School Night has been scheduled much earlier this year, and takes place next week on Wednesday staring at 6:00 pm. Come and see what great classrooms, and programs we have planned for this year. Thank you for your attention and goodbye.
